He performed Leon Russells song, A Song for You. He also accompanied his singing on the piano. Throughout the performance the audience continued to cheer for their hero far more than we’ve ever heard a crowd cheer for other contestants. Kodi’s voice was strong and soulful as he sang the well-loved lyrics, rising to the perfect pitch and hitting that high note as if it was nothing. ![]() As Kodi began to play “Bridge Over Troubled Water” by Simon & Garfunkel the crowd was already chanting his name to encourage the blind man to give it everything he had! ![]() Kodi’s mom and caretaker Tina Lee knelt next to her son before he began, giving him a few words of encouragement before moving off stage to stand with host Terry Crews. As Kodi took the stage for a second time we wondered if his first performance was just a fluke, but those concerns were instantly laid to rest the moment he started to sing. “I like to make people happy.Judges were moved to tears after hearing Kodi sang a passionate version of Leon Russell’s “A Song for You,” and all four couldn’t wait to move him on to the next round of the competition. “I’m going to keep performing for everybody,” he said. He added that he is committed to building his musical career, which includes local shows around Southern California, regardless of what happens in the competition. “It’s hard to explain, but as a mom it was like, ‘You got him where he wanted to go.’”Īs for Kodi, he is currently focused on preparing for the live performance portion of “America’s Got Talent” scheduled later this summer. Tina said one of the reasons she became emotional on stage after Kodi’s performance was because she kept thinking of all of the rehearsal time and effort he put in to get to that moment. Both mother and son say they’ve been touched by the messages they’ve received from autistic kids and their parents about what Kodi’s performance meant to them. Viewers met Tina alongside Kodi when she escorted him on stage and helped him to the piano during his audition. We said if you want to perform, you have to shake people’s hands and you got to let people come up and say hello to you,” she said. Tina Lee added that Kodi’s experiences as a performer have helped him adjust to meeting new people and being in crowds, two things he had previously struggled with. He began taking formal piano lessons four years ago at the age of 18 and said he is not interested in restricting himself to a particular style of music. In addition to dazzling audiences, music has also provided Lee with a much needed creative outlet.Įnthusiastic and outgoing, Lee speaks in short, upbeat sentences punctuated with exclamations like “wow!” and “heck, yeah!” His perfect pitch and memorization skills are a big assist in playing the piano, which has largely been self-taught.
